Such exploits could enable the reconstruction of original images from their hashes, thereby endangering the privacy of the very individuals these tools are meant to protect.

Perceptual hashing serves as an essential technology in the fight against non-consensual sharing of intimate images. These hashes allow platforms to identify and remove harmful content without needing to store or distribute the original files. Major online platforms—including social media giants—maintain databases of these perceptual hashes to prevent re-uploading known abusive images.

One notable tool, Take It Down, operated by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), allows users to submit hash values of images for sharing with partner sites such as Facebook and OnlyFans. However, the study indicates that the perception of security reinforced by the existing FAQ pages of these tools may be misleading.

“Our findings challenge the assumption that perceptual hashes alone are enough to ensure image privacy,” stated Hawkes. “Rather, perceptual hashes should be treated as securely as the original images.”

Co-authored by experts Dr. Maryam Mehrnezhad from Royal Holloway and Dr. Teresa Almeida from the University of Lisbon, the research underscored the need for heightened vigilance regarding the deployment of current IBSA removal technologies.
