In the course of Chinas transition from a planned to a market economy social governance has begun to experience a transformation from a system of regulation solely by the government to joint governance by government agencies businesses and nonprofit organizations. As Chinas social system is being redefined Chinese nonprofits have become an important and complex force of social development and progress comprising not only the governmental notforprofit organizations of the old system but also a wide array of newlyemerging social political and civil groups.
